            Google Email Advisory: Leaked Passwords

The Google Workspace email platform has an Artificial intelligence (A.I.) system that automatically flags Google email accounts at high risk of breach, accounts with potentially compromised passwords and other security vulnerabilities. As a result of this assessment, Google AI automatically suspends affected accounts and notifies Google Domain Administrators.

A number of student and staff accounts have been identified as being at risk and below are some of the possible reasons for this assessment.

  1. Use of weak passwords or sharing of passwords across systems that may have been compromised.
  2. Malware or virus infections on user computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones.
  3. Use of your staff corporate email on unsafe sites e.g., Betting, online gaming, dating or social media sites such as Tik-Tok, LinkedIn and facebook.
  4. Clicking links in unsolicited or marketing emails which may be phishing emails.

In order to safeguard your corporate email account, kindly review the following recommendations:

  • 2-step verification: Ensure you have set up your corporate email account with 2-step verification, contact ICT Support if you need assistance with this.
  • Consider using "passphrases" as passwords as they are often much easier to remember. e.g., "MyT0yotacar1ZBlack020", 'ChildBorn02Jan2019"
  • Never reuse passwords or distribute the same password across multiple accounts. Cause if one password gets compromised it could adversely affect other associated accounts.
  • Never use your KU Corporate email to access, register for non-work-related accounts / activities. If need be, use your personal email.

For further assistance kindly contact ICT Support on tel. +254 20 870 3103 or email: support@ku.ac.ke.
